Still possible to register for the 2nd International Conference on Global Warming and the Human-Nature Dimension in Siberiaand the Human - Nature Dimension in Siberia

Second circular

2nd International Conference
Global Warming and the Human - Nature Dimension in Siberia:
Social Adaptation to the Changes of the Terrestrial Ecosystem,
with an Emphasis on Water Environments
Yakutsk , Russia , 8 - 1 1 October , 2013 To be held and co-organized with the
7th Annual International Workshop
C/H2O/Energy balance and climate over boreal and arctic regions
with special emphasis on eastern Eurasia

Purpose
Global warming will likely transform Siberian environments. Early evidence indicates that carbon and hydrologic cycles are undergoing rapid change, with potentially grave impact s on Siberian flora and fauna. Human populations, which have adapted to great changes in social structure and environment in the past, will be forced to adapt again, but in this case to an unprecedented sequence of cascading environmental changes. In 2013 we commemorate 60 years since starting field experimental works at the scientific station "Spasskaya Pad" of IBPC SD RAS. At present, the station is rightfully considered to be a regional research outpost on the study of environmental and global climate changes in the cryolithzone. This conference will examine three aspects of climate-related environmental change: 1) current and likely future variations in water and carbon cycles ; 2) ongoing field observations and modeling studies of the effects of carbon and hydrologic variability in Eastern Siberian landscapes, and key feedbacks, exchanges and driving forces associated with these effects; and 3) the distinct social-economic impact of climate change on multi-ethnic Siberian societies , and their potential capabilities for adapt ation to projected change sin climate and terrestrial ecosystems. Contributions on these three aspects , or on the following key themes, are welcome .
Key themes
a) Physical and plant physiological processes of C/H2O/Energy cycles in Siberian ecosystems b ) Forest and tundra ecosystem structure related to C/H 2O/Energy cycles c ) Permafrost/cold climate processes and their impacts on C/H2O/Energy cycles d) Usage of satellite remote sensing technique s and the evelopment of C/H2O/Energy cycle models e) Interaction between wild/domesticated animals and terrestrial vegetation f) Vulnerabilities of landscapes, human systems, and infrastructures inpermafrost areas g) Ethnographic accounts of human - nature relations in conjunction with climate change h) Local knowledge of, adaptationstoand policies for responding to the changing climatei) Research status, cooperative arrangements, and plans for the future
Schedule
Conference: 8-10 October 2013 (Lecture Hall, National Academy, Yakutsk and Conference Hall, IBPC)Reception: 8 October 2013 Excursion: 11 around Yakutsk city

Workshop session between INTERACT and INCREASE at the INTECOL2013

The two networks INCREASE and INTERACT have been granted a common double workshop session at the INTECOL2013 conference in London 2013, 18-23 Aug

The description of the workshop is:
Ecosystem responses to climate change from the Arctic to the Amazon: New understanding and future challenges from experimental field-scale manipulations Climate change affects fundamental drivers and controls of ecosystem functioning and will lead to changes in physical, chemical and biological processes in terrestrial ecosystems in all parts of the globe. This will have impacts on plant growth, plant and soil carbon sequestration and biosphere-atmosphere feedbacks and will affect species competition and biodiversity and ultimately lead to species extinction. Experiments with climate factors have provided not only important understanding of the responses of biological processes and ecosystem functioning to these climatic changes but also a more general understanding of ecosystem structure and functioning and the links to the primary controls of these. Such understanding is fundamental if we are to explore possible futures and mitigate and adapt to climate change. The workshop aims to provide a present “state of understanding” of ecosystem responses to atmospheric and climatic changes based on two decades of climate change experiments and to outline and discuss the needs and directions for future experiments and ecosystem modeling.
We are unfortunately still awaiting a final confirmation from the INTECOL 2013 that it will take place Tuesday 20 August from 10.15-12.15 plus from 15.30-17.30. Potentially it could still be moved to one of the other days of the conference (19-23 August). However, time is running and since we will probably have one or two open slots for oral presentations plus a poster session (we assume immediately after the second part of the workshop at 17.30) it is really getting urgent to ask for abstracts. We will probably have about 30-40 poster stands available.

Therefore, please do not hesitate to put together an abstract (max. 500 words for the main text) and send it to Klaus Steenberg Larsen by e-mail (klas@kt.dtu.dk) no later than 15 May 2013 if you want to present your work. In your e-mail, please state if you would prefer an oral or a poster presentation. If you want to participate in the workshop without a presentation – please also inform Klaus Steenberg Larsen so that he can keep track of who is attending.

Please also remember to register for the INTECOL 2013. Do this via the homepage :
. You can also book your accommodation during the conference when you register.

The INTERACT station in Abisko has had a visit by the American Ambassador Brzezinski through the SAGA partnership.

Earlier this month, the U.S. Ambassador to Sweden Mark Brzezinski visited Abisko in the northernmost part of Sweden to view, first-hand, the impact that climate change has on a sub-Arctic environment. Station Manager Christer Jonasson gave a lecture and a tour of the station and near research sites. The Ambassador also got time to sit down for questions and discussions with researchers on site giving their views and sharing experiences
The Swedish American Green Alliance (SAGA) partnership was launched in February 2010 between the U.S. Embassy in Sweden and the Government of Sweden.
The visit is summarized in a video produced by the SAGA project.

INTERACT at GEPW-7 in Barcelona

INTERACT was represented at the 7th GEO European Projects’ Workshop that took place in Barcelona on April 15-16, 2013. The meeting gathered together over hundred representatives from the European projects within the Group on Earth Observations (GEO). The presentations during the two-day meeting covered a wide range of topics related to GEO Societal Benefit Areas, European Research Infrastructures, capacity building, and added value of GEO and GEOSS. Dr Hannele Savela from the Transnational Access work package gave a speech about the capacity building conducted by INTERACT in research and monitoring of Arctic environment, biodiversity and ecosystems in the SBA Session “Biodiversity, Agriculture and Ecosystems”, whereas INTERACT’s Joint Research Activities work packages were presented in the poster area of the workshop.
